The leaders of our trip to Mississippi did a thorough
job of preparing us for what we would see when we got down there.
We learned that we would not be working on rebuilding homes, but
on mudding them out. However, it is difficult to comprehend the
thorough destruction that occurred along the Gulf Coast, until
you are actually standing on a neighborhood street, looking at
homes that are standing, but molding on the inside and at debris
that used to be homes. It was a struggle for many on our team
as we helped people sort through the remnants of their homes in
search of a few treasures that could be saved. Yet, God was working
in all of us. We realized that God was indeed using us to rebuild
lives. He was using us to heal people spiritually and to offer
hope. God encouraged and uplifted us even in the midst of the
devastation. There is still so much that needs to be done, so
many people who need help- physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
But God is active and He’s using so many different kinds
of people to restore the people of Pass Christian. I was reminded
while volunteering at God’s Katrina Kitchen how diverse
the body of Christ is. There were so many unique believers working
side by side to bring healing to those in the area. It was exciting
to see God’s hands at work. Few of us wanted to leave at
the end of the week, but we knew God would be bringing others
in to continue the restoration. The importance of prayer was abundantly
clear on the trip and continues to be so now.
