Today is thanksgiving, and our day will also be special. We are leading a praise and worship time with all of us and 65 Haitian Americans at a small Nazarene Church in Longbeach which was destroyed, and will be rebuilt today.

The Pastor of the First UMC here where the girls are staying is delivering 80 pre-cooked Thanksgiving dinners. Our students are only pausing the work for the morning because we have scheduled it that day...they are itching to get back and help people.

Couple memories from yesterday:

  • 97 year old Resident Harold supervising a work team at his house
  • Team getting to throw appliances out of a second story of a house on stilts
  • "Uncle Mike" Smith helping to pick up and deliver 7500 lbs of drywall for a resident because he had a trailer....group of more than 10 unloading it in record time
  • We spent last night doing a fun slide show with whoever's digital cameras that would plug into the projector we brought along..What blast.
  • Mark got invited by the Director of Samaritan's purse to come tour Longbeach Rec Center that is being rebuilt...today our whole team will comb the property in one sweep to complete picking up debris behind it.
  • FEMA deciding yesterday that they wouldn't let volunteers use the shower trailers anymore...seeing our students positive attitudes about it anyway. (Some of the locals are pretty upset about that one, it may change back, but who knows...our little inconvenience in this is nothing compared to what people down here are facing)
  • Because of the work and testimony of our students, having a resident on fixed income write a check to the church we being housed in.
  • Trying to keep up with teams that are always asking "what next"...Troyer has put over 200 miles on the van running between projects and setting up new ones!

    Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

How many workers can you fit under a house?
